One of the most nutritious and in-trend fruits today is undoubtedly the Persimmon. The juicy, orange fruit is gaining popularity for its fresh, crisp taste and nature and people are wondering if they can grow it at home.

One of the first things to consider is what type of Persimmon you wish to grow. In India, most Persimmons found in the market, and grown even in warmer climates, are the ‘Fuyu’ variety. So, visit your nearby nursery and ask if they have dwarf Fuyu varieties.

Another thing to focus on is if you want to grow Persimmon with a seed or with a grafting. When grown through seeds, the Persimmon can take over 6 years to grow, and you cannot be sure of the pollination. So, choose a grafting for better results.

Persimmon bears fruits and they are heavy in nature. And so, the plant needs a hard, sturdy pot to support itself. From the branches to the roots, make sure to give it good space. And if you are growing it on a terrace or on a balcony, take a container at least 20 inches deep and wide.

To grow, and make the Persimmon fruit, the soil is also very important. For best results, use a mix of garden soil, peat moss, manure, and some sand for drainage.

If you bring a grafting home, make a hole about 5 inches deep in the soil and then place the root ball inside it. Cover it with soil again and then water it deeply to ensure that the roots have been watered well.

In about 50-60 days you’ll see the first new leaves growing in the pot. The leaves should be broad, thick, and tree-like. At this time, pinch or prune off any yellowing leaves.

Once the graft has new leaves, move the container to a full-sun location where it will get at least 6 hours of sunlight every day, especially in cold climates. If you live in a warmer place, 4 hours of sunlight would be apt.

The fertiliser needed for the plant depends on the location you are in. And to make the plant fruit well, it is best to feed it with a fertiliser in early spring. As a classic, the 10-10-10 can be used if no other variant is available.

The first fruits of the Persimmon grown through good quality grafting will begin to bloom in about 14-16 months from the time you bring it home. It grows well in colder climates, and when given the perfect conditions, the fruit can be harvested as early as 16-20 months.
