CHENNAI: Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and retired Supreme Court Judge V Ramasubramanian on Saturday said division, not just in the name of religion but in the name of everything, should be opposed.
Justice Ramasubramanian launched 'Unity India', a national forum for the promotion of communal amity in India, at a function in Chennai. Speaking at the event, he said: "Those who oppose division in the name of religion must also oppose division in the name of language and race. Division in the name of anything is to be condemned.”
Justice Ramasubramanian said in today's world “money is God and there are no non-believers. It is because we don't see the person who gives it. We are becoming more religious and not spiritual.” Prof. Faizan Mustafa, the vice chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna emphasised the same point saying that what prevails today in the name of religion is religiosity devoid of spirituality.
Earlier, retired Justice P N Prakash said Sanatana Dharma differs from Hindutva. “I am a person who follows Sanatana Dharma because people practising Sanatana Dharma do not see divisions among people. Hindutva, however, is a political ideology and it is different from Sanatana Dharma,” Prakash said.
'Unity India' core committee member A Faizur Rahman said the trust deficit between Hindus and Muslims would be bridged only when both communities condemn acts of violent extremism committed by their own members before condemning those committed by members of the other community.
Later, the NHRC Chairman released and read out the vision statement of ‘Unity India', which seeks to "reaffirm India’s soul as a land of coexistence, setting a global example that peace is possible, that unity is strength, and that true progress lies in embracing, not erasing, our differences.”
